D.1 Summary of EI operations
Two thousand and six was the middle year in EI’s triennial programme of activities for 2005-2007, which was adopted by the 4th World Congress in Porto Alegre in July 2004.
Two thousand and six also witnessed the historic creation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) following the merger of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) with the World Confederation of Labour (WCL). Through its position as Chair of the Conference of Global Union Federations (GUFs), EI played an important role in the discussions to unify the international trade union movement. By year’s end, EI was set to become the first organisation to chair the new Council of Global Unions, which would bring together the ITUC, the GUFs and the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC).
