Project Summary:
The Union of Education Workers in Burundi (STEB) has been working on the EFAIDS Programme in Burundi since 2008. STEB was involved from 2006 to 2008 in an HIV Prevention Programme supported by EI and WHO.
Activities in 2008
STEB carried out training workshops using the cascading training model implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and NGOs working in HIV prevention. All training sessions from national to regional levels stressed the importance of voluntary testing. The training of national trainers focused on the use of EI EFAIDS publications ‘Inclusion is the Answer’, the ‘Exercise Book on HIV Prevention for teachers’ and ‘Building a gender friendly school environment’. Thirty-one Master Trainers were trained, 4 of them Teachers Living with HIV and AIDS. An association of HIV positive teachers was created at the end of the workshop.
The training sessions at regional level resulted in STEB training almost 400 union representatives at the branch level from all 17 provinces of the country. At the end of the training sessions, over 100 union representatives committed to take a HIV test to know their status.
