Project Summary:
Gabonese unions SENA and FESEENA work together on the EFAIDS programme since 2006.
Activities in 2008
FESEENA and SENA focused on training and communication in 2008.
Through the cascade model almost 600 teachers in 6 of the country’s 9 regions have received training.
The unions mounted an active campaign to lobby government to include HIV and AIDS education in the school curriculum. This work came to fruition in 2008 when the Gabonese Government through the National AIDS Committee situated within the Gabonese Ministry of Education (Colusimen) decided to develop a harmonised curriculum on HIV/AIDS education. School inspectors, as well as representatives of union organisations were actively involved in the process to revise the civic education curriculum. A decision was also taken to train teachers and administrative staff and to extend the integration of HIV/AIDS into other disciplines such as language classes.
The HIV prevalence rate in Gabon is around 8 percent and according to a study conducted by the Committee against HIV of the Ministry of Education (COLUSIMEN), teaching personnel are heavily affected. Therefore the interventions made by unions under the EFAIDS Programme have the potential to have particular resonance and contribute to lowering HIV prevalence and promoting inclusive policies both within and beyond the education sector.
