Project Summary:

The Ghanaian National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Teachers & Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) work together on a well-balanced programme that includes activities under training, research, policy development, advocacy and publicity.

Activities in 2008

A research survey entitled, “Awareness and Use of HIV/AIDS Prevention Methods among Teachers and Educational Workers in Ghana”, was carried out resulting in recommendations to open more counselling centres, promote VCT among members, involve members in skills-building programmes, and carry out more programmes targeting young people.

The research survey was also instrumental in the development of policy. The Workplace Policy on HIV and AIDS was reviewed and extended to detail how the unions can prevent or mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on members. A ‘Policy Document on EFA’ was elaborated which identifies factors affecting quality public education in Ghana and advocates action the unions can take to influence the achievement of EFA. The policy reflected the expertise of many stakeholders and was drafted during a workshop on EFA which brought together the national executives of GNAT and TEWU, as well as the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry for Education, Youth and Sports.

A successful workshop on EFA was held to raise awareness of the EFA goals and the benefits of implementing them amongst 35 union members from the worst affected areas. The policies and the survey, together with an informative brochure on EFAIDS were published and widely circulated to union activists, teachers and educational stakeholders.

Training workshops continued, 95 teachers and educational workers were trained, and in turn trained teachers and students within their schools. Over 1000 teachers and fifty-five schools have been reached through EFAIDS training.
