Project Summary:
Dominican union, the Asociación Dominicana de Profesores, works with teacher unions FAPROUASD and ANPROTED on the programme.
Training is at the core of their activities and since the beginning of the EFAIDS programme, more than 21000 students have now received HIV prevention education in the classroom from trained teachers.
In 2008, 480 new teachers were trained on delivering HIV prevention education in a total of 13 workshops. Forty-two branch union leaders, together with the ADP leadership participated in a training workshop led by the Honduran EFAIDS coordinator Rosario Avila in the framework of regional union. The unions organised 250 parents meetings in schools in order to bring the benefit of the EFAIDS Programme to the local community.
Union activism seeks to include the one fifth of Dominican children of primary-school age who remain out of school and to secure significant investment to upgrade a poorly resourced school infrastructure. ADP carried out extensive advocacy to encourage the government of the Dominican Republic to follow through on the General Education Law 66-97 which guarantees 4 percent of GDP be assigned to education.
A campaign under the slogan ‘Because a year without school...is a century of misery’ ran during late 2008 through which ADP raised awareness amongst the general public and collected signatures in support of their petition on quality public education. The campaign was promoted in community events, baseball games, and cultural activities. At the end of November, the union presented the collected signatures to the government and lobbied for a twenty year plan to protect and strengthen quality public education.
World AIDS Day 2008 was marked by ADP following one week of preparation in many schools prior to the day itself.
