Project Summary:

The EFAIDS programme is coordinated by six teacher unions who form the Federación de Organizaciones Magisteriales de Honduras (FOMH). Involved in work on EFA and HIV since 2006, FOMH proceeded to set up an inter-union National Committee for HIV. To facilitate the involvement and active interest of all participating unions, planning sessions at the beginning of 2008 rotated between the offices. Planning was also carried out with the boards of various schools with the aim of fostering their interest in EFAIDS activities.

FOMH is working to improve the quality of education in Honduras. One of their key priorities is to secure the employment of 1,500 qualified teachers to keep pace with rising enrolment. FOMH also recognise that for education to improve, teachers must be guaranteed a regular living wage and this was a key focus of advocacy during 2008.

FOMH has built partnerships with, the Ministries of Education and of Health, the National Commission for Human Rights and the National AIDS Commission. Representatives of the Ministries of Health and Education participated in training sessions.

In 2008, four regional HIV prevention workshops involving teachers from various school levels were held. A further seminar was held for the members of the boards of the various unions. A priority area was the inclusion of Teachers Living with HIV in the EFAIDS training.
