Project Summary:

In 2008, CTERA used its participation in the EFAIDS programme to consolidate its role as a key player in HIV prevention, both at home and in the region. A representative of the union participated in the Mexico AIDS Conference. CTERA work on HIV prevention dates back to 1995, policy development over the years means the union has been influential in fostering attitudes towards healthy living. CTERA has adopted a human-rights based approach in their work on HIV, and combating discrimination and pursuing gender equality have been central aspects of their approach. A principal focus has been sustained training of teachers on HIV prevention.

Through its work in the EFAIDS Programme, CTERA has worked for the inclusion of HIV positive teachers, addressing many cross cutting issues in the process. CTERA has consolidated its partnerships with other organisations over the past 18 months, namely agreements with the University of Buenos Aires and INADI (National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism). CTERA also participates in various networks working on HIV. On World AIDS Day 2008, the House of Representatives of the city of Buenos Aires recognised CTERA for its longstanding work in the field of HIV/AIDS

CTERA is vocal in its campaign for sustained investment in quality public education, and advocates strongly for the well-being of teachers and for better learning conditions for students. CTERA’s work to promote sound education expenditure has made it a significant stakeholder in the education sector. CTERA is successful in bringing Education for All issues to its members, and also creating interest in the wider community through its weekly radio programme ‘Canto Maestro’. This is an important means by which to publicise CTERA activities under the EFAIDS Programme, such as hosting an Open Day for members of the public atCTERA’s testing centre on 1 December.
