Project Summary:
CNTE continue to campaign for the implementation of the national base wage for teachers which the government have committed to respecting but which some states have been slow to comply with. Furthermore CNTE oppose the trend towards temporary teaching contracts and their adverse impact on quality education. A recent public survey on Brazilian education shows one fifth of Brazilians believe poor pay and motivation for teachers is the main obstacle to quality education in Brazil.
Over the last decade a pro-active, multi-sectoral approach to HIV prevention has been successful in containing the AIDS epidemic. Brazil has a 0.5 percent HIV prevalence rate among adults. As school is young people’s second most important source of information on HIV prevention, teacher unions have a vital role to play in ensuring that the HIV epidemic does not become generalised.
CNTE, within the context of the EFAIDS Programme, cooperates with Ministries of Education and Health to achieve effective interventions at school level. In June, CNTE shared their experience of working on school-based health programmes in a panel discussion during the National Exhibition on Health and HIV Prevention in Schools. CNTE members also participated in the National Seminars on AIDS and STIs, and many union branches held sessions to share the outcomes at local level.
To mark World AIDS Day, CNTE helped to coordinate the National Lesson on STIs and AIDS, which targeted public schools throughout Brazil. To complement the ‘One Hour on AIDS’ material, CNTE produced their own resources and promoted the government multi-media kit for adolescents. Over a third of Brazilian states participated in EFAIDS activities during 2008.
