Project Summary:
Trinidad and Tobago ranks second in the rate of prevalence of HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean. The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers' Association is taking the lead in the fight against HIV infection, particularly taking into account the fact that most new infection occur between the ages of 15 - 45 years and that teachers and students are within this range.
The union, a member of the National HIV and AIDS Committee, has worked to prevent new HIV infections among educators and learners through policy development, advocacy, learning institutions-based sensitization interventions, and the elaboration of Codes of Conduct that establish gender-safe learning institutions.
Activities in 2008
In order to ensure sustainability of training initiatives, the association has held meetings with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders with a view to discussing future actions to guarantee HIV and AIDS are part of teacher training curriculum.
TUTTA’s training strategy consists of different cycles, and the objective is to build on the contents discussed in previous sessions. In 2008, district representatives engaged in review of the activities to date and prepared detailed proposals for district training. Over 190 district executive members benefitted from these workshops. The union has also engaged members of Parent and Teachers’ Associations. By continuing this work, TUTTA expects to make accurate information on HIV and AIDS available in every school in Trinidad & Tobago.
