Project Summary:
A consortium of EI cooperating partners was established in 2007 to assist the National Teachers' Association of Liberia (NTAL) in post-merger consolidation work. The new NTAL was established in May 2007 as a result of the merger of the country's two biggest teacher unions - the National Teachers' Association of Liberia (NTAL) and the Liberia National Educational Workers Union (LINEWU).
The Liberia Consortium consists of CTF (Canada), DLF (Denmark), NEA (United States), Utdanningsforbundet (Norway) and Lärarförbundet (Sweden). Under the aegis of EI, the consortium supports NTAL in its efforts to reorganise its branches and empower its national secretariat so as to serve its members better.
Aims of the project:
• Strengthen the organisation through recruitment of more members
• Increase level of understanding of trade unionism as well as the capacity of members and office bearers
• Improve overall communication within the organisation and negotiating capacity
Expected Results:
• Visitation strategies developed
• Membership strengthened
• NTAL has updated information of its entire membership
• NTAL is visible in private schools
• Information dissemination improved and made regularly
• More informed and committed members with a sense of belonging to NTAL
• Good governance and leadership in the administration of NTAL
• Increased membership
• NTAL is a strong advocate for teachers, gender equality and for education
Working Methods:
Consortium
In 2009, the consortium provided institutional support for the office and to re-organize the branches, recruit new members, register old members and create a data base. Two newsletters were also supported to share information with the membership. A brochure and a membership handbook were also produced. All these were used for the district elections, and the national convention held in August 2009. With a democratically elected leadership in place the consortium visited Liberia from the 18-25 September to create, together with the national leadership, a two-year plan based of the developmental needs approved by the NTAL convention. A program has been put in place for the period October 2009-2011.
