Project Summary:
BUPL and NUT have conducted small scale activities together since 2008. The overall aim of the cooperation has been to secure good working conditions, professional development and strengthened organisation of early childhood educators in Nigeria. Last year BUPL and NUT decided to extend the scope of cooperation by applying for funds from DANIDA. BUPL and NUT applied for a so called Partnership Project aiming to build a strong partnership between the two unions and pave the way for future cooperation. In March 2011 a five month long Partnership Project was approved by DANIDA.
Overall objective:
Improved working conditions and strengthened organisation of Nigerian early childhood educators, especially those in the private sector, through developing a strong partnership with Nigeria Union of Teachers and building the organisational and professional capacity of the union in the area of Early Childhood Education.
Specific processes
1. Partnership development: Development of collaborative relations between BUPL and NUT and strategic development of the partnership and planning of future interventions, through exchange of experience between the two partners, and development of professional relations.
2. Organisational development: Organisational and professional capacity building of NUT with regard to addressing the needs and interests of early childhood educators (especially those from the private sector) as a special group, as well as in order to enhance NUT´s capability to monitor, advocate and account for decent work employment for the target group.
3. Social dialogue: Enhancing NUT’s ability and capacity to participate in national and international social dialogue, including interacting and cooperating with the government of Nigeria and other stakeholders.
Activities
The main activities within the Partnership Project are exchange of union representatives through study trips to Denmark and Nigeria, respectively.
Accordingly, in June 2011 six key persons from Nigeria Union of Teachers went on a study trip to Denmark. Among other things, the representatives visited various institutions and organisations such as BUPL’s Head Office and local branches, day care centres, teacher training colleges, and government authorities. The aim of the visits was to give NUT representatives insights into how the Early Childhood Education sector is organised in Denmark, and give inspiration on how to organise and advance the Early Childhood Education sector in Nigeria within the areas of expected future interventions, namely professional training, standards and working conditions. Moreover, a partnership development workshop and a future workshop were conducted.
In August 2011 five delegates from BUPL went to Nigeria to conduct similar study visits. Moreover, a National Seminar on Early Childhood Education and a Capacity Building Workshop was conducted.
