Research paper: Teacher shortage in primary education in Côte d'Ivoire (in French) Cascade training update |
| Grouping: | EI Education For All-HIV/AIDS Prevention (EFAIDS) Programme |
Project Summary:
In Côte d'Ivoire, the IE-SCI (Education International - Côte d'Ivoire Section) groups four teacher unions (SNEPPCI, SYNADEEPCI, SYNESCI and SYNARES) working together on the EFAIDS Programme since 2006. They were involved in the former EI HIV Prevention Programme from 2002 to 2005.
Activities in 2008
In 2008, the IE-SCI has achieved success with training and research.
Training sessions to strength the capacities of Executive Board members of the four unions, trainers and teachers (primary and secondary levels), including those studying in teacher training colleges across Côte d’Ivoire were a priority in 2008. Almost 600 teachers were trained on HIV/AIDS education, EFA and violence in school.
Using the cascade model, teachers have attended training workshops seeking to affect behavioural change (18,000 teachers have been trained in government controlled territory since the beginning of the programme in 2006). In 2008, the coalition was able to conduct training in territory previously controlled by rebels. This training focused on establishing an environment of non-violence in schools.
To supplement the training, unions undertook a survey of national laws and legislation which relate to eliminating violence in schools.
The unions successfully lobbied the government to address the teacher shortage in two regions of the countries, namely San Pédro and Bondoukou. Consequently the government committed to make progress on teacher supply, to improve professional development opportunities and to pay the arrears linked to correction pay.
The prevalence of HIV dropped from 10 percent in 2001 to 3.9 percent in 2008. Today it is estimated that one teacher dies a month, whereas previously five teachers were lost every week.
