Study on the impact of HIV/AIDS on quality and availablity of education in Guinea (in French) |
| Grouping: | EI Education For All-HIV/AIDS Prevention (EFAIDS) Programme |
Project Summary:
In Guinea, the Professional Union Federation of the Education Sector (‘Fédération Syndicale Professionnelle de l'Education – FSPE’) and the Free Union of Teachers and Researchers of Guinea (‘Syndicat Libre des Enseignants et Chercheurs de Guinée – SLECG’) have been working together on the programme since 2006. The cooperation strengthens the work of the unions and their joint initiatives and advocacy have resulted in better working conditions for Guinean teachers and learning environment for Guinean children.
Activities in 2008
In 2008, SLECG and FSPE worked to introduce pre-service training on HIV and AIDS and accordingly trained 45 teachers working in teacher training colleges, with the result that all of the 8 national teacher training colleges (‘Ecoles Normales d’Instituteurs – ENI’) have staff well-versed in HIV and AIDS education. The two unions also trained over 100 trainers and 1200 teachers from 440 schools last year. The training included not only EI EFAIDS material but also additional EFA resources to show the Dakar Framework of Action, the EFA situation in Guinea and the national Education Sector Programme (‘Programme Sectoriel de l’Education’).
A National Day on HIV/AIDS Prevention in schools and voluntary testing was organised in the districts of Gaoual, Koubia, Kouroussa and Télimélé reaching not only teachers and students but also parents, education authorities and religious leaders. There was an additional focus on the need to send all children to school and particularly girls who are more likely to be out of school in these four districts.
