Project Summary:

The Kenya National Union of Teachers place great emphasis on both aspects of the EFAIDS Programme reflected in their development of two policies; the KNUT Workplace Policy on HIV & AIDS and the KNUT Education Policy Document. KNUT also finalised a Code of Ethics for teachers in 2008. Advocacy and training activities based on these documents and additional EFAIDS resources are a central part of the KNUT EFAIDS Programme.

KNUT trained members of the Kenya Network of HIV Positive Teachers (KENEPOTE) on the use of the HIV Policy to reduce stigma and discrimination in the Workplace. The unions also promotes broad based education sector cooperation through supporting and raising awareness of the Ministry of Education’s Workplace Policy.

In 2008 300 teachers were trained on the use of EFAIDS materials. Additionally 32 Master Trainers from eight districts, together with the district branch Executive Secretaries were trained on the management of HIV and AIDS issues, and promoting gender friendly environments in schools. About 6 percent of the Kenyan population is living with HIV, while this estimate may be as high as 18 percent amongst women aged 15-24.

KNUT undertook research into the situation of orphaned children in the school setting, which was used at a consultative meeting to draft a Policy on Orphans and Vulnerable Children. The important role of teacher welfare in securing quality education was the logic behind a 2 day consultative meeting to investigate the needs of teachers. Workshops were held with union activists to discuss the implications of the research and move ahead with an action plan. There are over one million children classified as orphaned or vulnerable in Kenya.
