Project Summary:
Through their EFAIDS Programme, the Lesotho Association of Teachers has developed a HIV/AIDS Policy. The policy’s objectives are to strengthen and increase awareness of the effects of HIV/AIDS, to ensure that learners and teachers infected and affected with HIV/AIDS are not subjected to any form of discrimination, to participate in the development school Health HIV/AIDS curriculum and to create a supportive climate for teachers and learners living with HIV and AIDS. Lesotho has a high level of HIV prevalence, with an estimated 23 percent of adults living with the disease.
To alleviate the impact of HIV and AIDS on the education sector, LAT has established AIDS working groups in schools, and helped community and parent support groups.
LAT partners on policy development with a range of stakeholders in the education sector, such as the Ministry of Education and the Lesotho Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (LENEPHWA). LAT is linking up with LENEPHWA to optimise the effectiveness of their trainings especially drama workshops on the Know Your Status campaign.
In 2008 LAT aimed to lend sustainability to their EFAIDS Programme, and organised training on project proposal writing and research skills for Master Trainers. By giving trainers the skills to conduct research, LAT can be sure of having up-to-date and accurate data from which to implement targeted and effective activities. In 2008, LAT surveyed the efficacy of Peer Educators on HIV and AIDS. During 2009, research on the needs of Teachers Living with HIV is being carried out.
