Project Summary:
In Malawi, the majority of school-age children are in education, 94 percent, however large class sizes are a barrier to quality, with an average pupil-teacher ratio of 61. In 2007/2008 14 percent of government expenditure was directed to education. HIV prevalence is estimated at 14 percent. Through the EFAIDS Programme the Teachers' Union of Malawi is contributing to resolving these challenges in the education sector.
Activities in 2008
The Teachers Union of Malawi trained 100 Master Trainers, 68 teachers, reaching out to 168 schools. 66 peer educators throughout 6 districts were trained. A workshop brought together 68 school principals and trained them in tackling stigma and discrimination. In a further workshop, 34 Primary Education Advisers were given advocacy skills on EFA.
A Policy on EFA was developed and distributed, together with research findings from 2007. A concise version of the findings was also circulated to teachers and stakeholders.
