Project Summary:

Launched in January 2006, the EFAIDS Programme is an initiative of EI and its partners the WHO (World Health Organisation) and EDC (Education Development Center). It combines the efforts of teachers’ unions in advocating for Education For All (EFA) at national level with their commitment to HIV/AIDS prevention in schools locally. The Programme is essentially a fusion of two previously separate initiatives, namely the HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme and the EFA Programme.

Aims:

• Prevent new HIV infections among teachers and learners
• Mitigate the negative effect of AIDS on achieving EFA goals
• Increase the number of learners completing basic education

Expected results:

• Increased awareness on HIV/AIDS
• Increase awareness as to the role of unions on EFA
• Union HIV/AIDS policies developed
• Union position papers on EFA developed
• Union membership mobilised around EFA
• Trainers and teachers trained on HIV/AIDS education
• HIV/AIDS school focal points trained in every school of each country participating in the programme
• Schools with skills-based HIV education programmes in place
• Schools with comprehensive policies and interventions against gender-based violence and discrimination
• Campaign materials developed

Working method:
Research, policy development, advocacy, publicity and training carried out by EI affiliated unions in the domain of HIV/AIDS education and the achievement of Education for All.
