Project Summary:
SNEN participated in the EFAIDS programme since 2006. In 2008 a further 4 teacher unions (SYNATREB/SNEB/SYNAEN/SYNTEN) joined the programme and conduct their activities under the name the EFAIDS National Coalition of Niger. To work more effectively across Niger, the unions have developed eight regional groups which are comprised of members of the different unions, and each regional group includes two trainers from SNEN union. SNEN was involved in the former EI HIV Prevention Programme from 2002 to 2005 and brings this knowledge to the regional groups.
Activities in 2008
The EFAIDS National Coalition of Niger saw success in 2008 with its Education for All work and advocacy efforts for better conditions for contract teachers.
The Coalition conducted a study in collaboration with the University of Niamey on ‘The impact of the practice of using contract teachers on quality education in Niger’. The results of the study were summarised in a brochure distributed to all education stakeholders and will be a basis for further advocacy efforts towards the promotion of EFA in Niger and the achievements of the Dakar and Millennium objectives. The Coalition used the research to ground their response to the proposed Law for the Organisation of the Education System in Niger, more particularly on its relevance to professional and technical training (LOSEN).
In training, the Coalition focused on training the leadership of the unions on EFA and HIV/AIDS. The Coalition also trained 360 teachers on EFA and HIV/AIDS this year from 28 colleges and higher education schools.
The Coalition organised several talks and debates with teachers in 25 schools on the importance of Voluntary Counselling and Testing as part of their advocacy strategy on HIV and AIDS.
To mark International Women’s Day, the Coalition organised a conference-debate on the theme of ‘violence in schools’ attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, teachers, students and NGOs. For World Teachers’ Day a conference on ‘The role of teachers in the peace process in Niger’ was held.
