Project Summary:
The Union of Education Personnel of Rwanda has been implementing the EFAIDS Programme since 2006. SYPERWA (former EEF) was involved in the EI HIV Prevention Programme from 2002 to 2005.
Activities in 2008
On research, SYPERWA conducted a study to identify the needs of Teachers Living with HIV and AIDS in order that the union respond to them in a more appropriate way. Following the study, SYPERWA put in place the Network of Infected or Affected Rwandan Teachers and has invited HIV positive teachers to be involved in their activities in relation to HIV and AIDs prevention and education.
In the field of advocacy, 30 district committees were established to lobby for the inclusion of HIV and AIDS education in the school curricula, which resulted in the Ministry of Education agreeing such a move.
On training, SYPERWA trained 40 members of the union leadership and existing national trainers to familiarise them with the new EI material on Inclusion and Support to HIV positive teachers and on building gender friendly schools. The training was then delivered by national trainers to more than 400 teachers from 200 schools in 30 districts of the country. Training sessions on HIV/AIDS prevention education were also conducted adding over 600 teachers (school focal points) coming from 300 schools at district level to the pool of trainers.
3000 copies of a brochure summarising the Dakar Framework of Action and Rwandan EFA plan of action were also distributed to trained teachers.
