Project Summary:
Activities in 2008
In 2008, funding awarded to SADTU under the EFAIDS Programme was combined so as to implement the Teacher Well-Being Project in collaboration with TIP, a Research Institute in the University of the Western Cape, and the Centre for Education Policy Development. 2008 constituted the first year of a five year cycle of project implementation; Phase One to be completed in 2010 and based in the Western Cape and Phase Two which will run from 2011-2013 and focus on the Kwa-Zulu Natal district.
A preliminary research study which will inform subsequent advocacy, policy development and training was initiated. During 2008 the Teacher Well-Being Project established links with three secondary schools and this will be expanded in 2009. A questionnaire on teacher well-being was distributed amongst teachers in the nine provinces and the preliminary results were coded and will continue to be analysed throughout 2009.
The Western Cape Provincial Conference in October 2008 provided an ideal platform to launch the programme to union activists. During the meeting 220 delegates from the Western Cape region, together with leaders from other provinces and the national executive, were briefed on the initial research findings. These discussions led the Teacher Development Commission to strengthen resolutions related to teacher wellbeing in the context of HIV. Consultations were held at various levels within the union to achieve agreement on the principle foundations of Teacher Well-Being.
