Project Summary:
The Zambia National Union of Teachers has been working with EI since 2001 on school health and HIV & AIDS prevention and joined the EFAIDS programme in 2006.
Activities in 2008
The Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) made training a priority in 2008. Over the course of the year more than 240 teachers were trained. The union also worked with local and mid-level leadership on capacity-building so that they could work autonomously within the EFAIDS Programme.
Resulting from their work on the EFAIDS Programme, ZNUT was invited to participate as a civil society representative in the 2008 UN High-Level meeting on AIDS in June.
EFAIDS related news and events were published in the union publication, The Teachers’ Voice, so that teachers and union members could learn more about the Programme.
Activities in 2006
ZNUT has carried on its training on HIV & AIDS prevention effort, and developed a ZNUT EFAIDS training manual; 25% of its members were trained.
The new EFAIDS programme has been introduced to the union, at all levels; articles on EFA and HIV and AIDS are regularly published in the union magazine.
The union networked with the governmental agencies in charge of fighting against AIDS and with civil society organisations, in particular Teachers Living with HIV and AIDS.
