Project Summary:
Guyana is the country with the second highest prevalence rate of HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean. The Guyana Teachers’ Union is senstive to the impact on the education system, and by extension teachers, students and parents. The GTU believes a systematic and focused response by all stakeholders within the education sector is crucial. More particularly, the social concerns for teachers and students living with HIV and AIDS require timely and targeted responses from educational institutions and the teacher union.
Consequently, in 2008, the GTU aimed to equip teachers and union personnel with the necessary life skills to assist them in the task of reducing the incidence of HIV and AIDS in schools and their communities. Since the beginning of the programme, GTU has trained over 700 teachers, helping them promote Education For All by advocating and working for gender safe schools.
Teachers have also fought against stigma and discrimination by promoting greater involvement of people living with HIV and AIDS. The union’s workplace HIV policy and Code of Conduct and Ethics illustrate the commitment of GTU in the response to HIV. Training activities will continue, in line with GTU’s objective to have at least one trained EFAIDS focal point in each school.
