Teopista BIRUNGI MAYANJA

Teopista BIRUNGI MAYANJA

Teopista was born and bred in Uganda. She is married with two daughters and a son.

Teopista first graduated with a Diploma in Education in 1980, and she furthered her studies by obtaining a Bachelor of Education, then a Masters of Education, both from Makerere University, Kampala. She later obtained a post-graduate Certificate in Physical Education and Sport Science from the University of Leipzig in Germany.

Teopista started her education career as a primary school teacher. She then served for 7 years as a head teacher. During her term as head teacher, she became actively involved in the 1993 Primary Education Reform in Uganda. The experience brought her into the advocacy work in the education sector. She was particularly interested in the review of the curricula in physical education and education foundations.

Teopista is the founding and current General Secretary of the Uganda National Teachers Union(UNATU). She describes herself as a sports and education activist.

Teopista's activism in education is equally matched by her excellence in sports. Up to 1993, she was a national athlete in track and field, netball and handball. She is currently an umpire and referee for soccer, handball and netball, and an instructor for soccer referees and of the International Olympic Academy in the area of women's sports. Teopista was also the first woman soccer referee in Uganda.
