Haldis was born in 1960 in Oslo, Norway, where she now lives.
She graduated as a teacher in 1983, after majoring in English and Physical Education. She is also qualified to teach macroeconomics.
Haldis has worked as a teacher in primary, lower secondary and upper secondary schools. For six years, she worked in Finnmark, the northern most region of Norway, and has since 1991 worked in the region of Akershus in the southeast of the country.
Haldis' drive and leadership qualities are exemplary in her involvement in union activism. She has been a union representative at all local, regional and national levels. In 1997, Haldis became an elected full time regional leader in her union. In 2001, she became Vice-President of Norsk Lærerlag (NL).
Since the merger of the two largest teacher unions in Norway in 2002, she was elected leader of the section for compulsory school teachers (grades 1 - 10), and an Executive Board member of Utdanningsforbundet (Union of Education Norway). Utdanningsforbundet is Norway's largest union for teaching personnel with 136 000 members working in all areas of the education system.
Haldis represents Norway on the EI Pan European Committee, and is currently also an EI Vice-President.
