Juçara Maria DUTRA VIEIRA

After graduating with a degree in Language & Literature, with specialisation in Brazilian literature, Juçara entered the public education sector in 1970, as a teacher in Portuguese language, Brazilian literature and related disciplines.

Along with her teaching activities, Juçara has always been active in the Brazilian trade union movement as well as its political arena.

Currently the President of the "Confederação Nacional dos Trabalhadores em Educação" (CNTE) [National Confederation of Education Workers], Juçara also presides over the "Centro dos Professores do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul" (CPERS-Sindicato) [Centre for Teachers of the state of Rio Grande do Sul], the state in which she was born.

In the eighties, she was an alderwoman in the municipality of Vacaria in Rio Grande do Sul, representing the Labour Party. She was Vice President of CPERS from 1993 to 1996 and was then elected President from 1999 to 2002. She was reelected for the term 2003-2005.

At CNTE, she held the positions of Educational Affairs Secretary from 1995 to 1997, International Relations Secretary from 1997 to 1999, and Vice President from 1999 to 2002. She became its President from 2002 to 2005 and was reelected for the term 2005-2008.

Juçara also participated actively in the work of international trade union movement. She was member of EI's Secondary Education Committee from 1995 to 1998. In July 2004, she was elected as a vice President of EI at its fourth World Congress held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2004.

A prolific writer, Juçara's works include: "Gaúcho: Espaço e Argumento" (Gaucho: Space and Argument), "Os Lugares da Argumentação na Propaganda" (The Places of Argument in Propaganda) and "Identidade Expropriada: Retrato do Educador Brasileiro" (Expropriated Identity: Portrait of the Brazilian Educator).

Because of her trajectory in defense of quality public education for all, she was indicated for and is a member of the Economic and Social Development Counsel, an interlocution forum with the Brazilian society, instituted by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in which she represents the working class.

Juçara was born in 1950. She currently lives in Brazil.
