Dr Patrick Roach is Deputy General Secretary at NASUWT - the teachers' union.
The NASUWT is the largest teachers' union in the UK, representing classroom teachers and school and college leaders. The NASUWT is politically independent and aims to serve the best interests of teachers and the education system regardless of which party forms the Government.
Patrick was appointed as the union's Deputy General Secretary in June 2010. He has an extensive track record of working with Government, including in the development of the national school workforce social partnership for England and Wales, where he played a key role in the development of professional standards and national pay and conditions of service frameworks for teachers and school leaders.
Patrick leads the NASUWT's programme of international activity, with particular emphasis on support for teachers who are subject to politically repressive regimes, and support for capacity building with sister teacher unions in developing countries. The Union's programme of support for migrant teachers has achieved widespread recognition, together with financial support from the UK Government.
Patrick's career includes time served as a teacher of politics and sociology to 16-19 year old students in further education colleges. Patrick has also lectured on social policy issues to undergraduate and post-graduate students in two UK universities. Research exploring the career experiences, values and professional practice of teachers are amongst Dr Roach's areas of interest/specialism.
Patrick has been involved in leading a range of innovative programmes focusing on teacher education, working with disaffected and excluded young people, and engaging parents and local communities.
