Jerome FERNANDEZ (Coordinator - Aceh)

Jerome FERNANDEZ

Jerome Fernandez was appointed as coordinator of Education International for Aceh with effect from May 2005.

Jerome started his career as a secondary school teacher and retired as a headmaster in 2001.

He was involved with Malaysian teacher organisations for more than 30 years, having held positions as Secretary of the state branch of the National Union of the Teaching Profession and Education Officer and Deputy President at national level. He was also the Divisional Secretary of the Congress of Unions in the Public and Civil Service (CUEPACS) and also of the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) at state level.

Mr Fernandez has attended numerous trade union courses both locally and overseas. He was also a panel member of the Industrial Court of Malaysia. His position as the Vice President of the National Joint Council for the Teaching Service involved him in negotiations with the government on issues including the salary and working conditions of teachers. Jerome has also assisted IFFTU and WCOTP in their training programs in Thailand and Bangladesh. Prior to his appointment as coordinator he was assisting EI in projects in Indonesia.

His position in Aceh involves the supervision and coordination of the post–tsunami EI projects and projects funded by NOVIB, i.e. building of schools, teacher training and training of teachers to handle trauma and selecting students to receive scholarships.
