USA: Support for hurricane victims (08 November 2012)
In late October, Hurricane Sandy became one of the most destructive storms ever to hit the United States. Many teachers, their education colleagues, and their families and communities, suffered a tremendous blow and now face a long and hard recovery.

Towns and cities have suffered a tragic loss in lives, and also great damage to homes, schools, and community facilities. Healthcare workers are facing challenges brought on by the number of sick and injured, and public sector workers now face the enormous task of rebuilding parts of cities and towns, in some cases left without food, clean water, power, and transportation.
Teachers have played a critical role in keeping rescue and relief efforts going. While many schools in New York and New Jersey remain closed due to water damage and lack of power, others have been converted into evacuation centers and shelters for displaced families. Teachers are rallying to hold classes at alternate sites where they can.
The UFT in New York is the organization which represents the majority of teachers in that area. It is an affiliate of the two Education International member organisations in the USA. EI affiliates have always been at the forefront of solidarity in the wake of human tragedy. American teachers welcome your support. You may send messages of support to the UFT President at mmulgrew@uft.org.
If you wish to make a secure online donation please visit the AFT Disaster Relief Fund. Contributions will be distributed to those members most in need during this critical time.
For supporting New Jersey union members in distress please send donations to the New Jersey Education Association Hurricane Relief Fund. http://www.njea.org/news/2012-11-05/njea-launches-hurricane-relief-fund
