As the situation in Egypt worsens to an alarming degree, EI’s concern for the safety and security of people, including teachers, trade unionists, students and children, grows exponentially.
EI expresses its full support and solidarity to the Egyptian people in their quest for fundamental freedoms and rights. EI also expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the many victims of the Mubarak regime’s violent repression of the legitimate protest actions which have and will continue to take place throughout the country.
EI call for action:
EI calls upon its members on an urgent basis to call upon their governments to exert maximum international pressure on the Government of Egypt to:
- Bring about a democratic transition that includes full respect for freedom of association, collective bargaining and other core labour standards;
- Protect its citizens during peaceful protest, with the full force of the law;
- End its communication blackout which constitutes a serious violation of the rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.
Please address your communications to:
- The Head of your Government (Prime Minister, President...)
- The Minister of Foreign Affairs in your country
- The Egyptian Embassy in your country
Please also copy your letter to EI (headoffice@ei-ie.org or fax +32 2 224 0606)
Thank you in advance for your solidarity and support.
