Romania: Teachers ask president to mediate conflict

published 7 June 2006 updated 7 June 2006

Romanian EI affiliate Fédération des Syndicats de l’Enseignement SPIRU-HARET have demanded President Traian Basescu to once again intervene in their relations with the government, as the agreement reached with the government after their last protest has not been respected.

The union accuses the government of continuing to treat teachers and trade unions with disrespect; the stipulations of the agreement signed by the union and the Romanian government last November should have been applied by June 1.

However, to date, the government has allotted only nine percent of the sum stipulated in the agreement, which reached 1.1 billion euros.
