published 27 June 2006 updated 27 June 2006

Members of EI affiliate the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association (CITA) will join the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC) in a nationwide strike on Monday 3rd July.

The strike action, which will affect schools and factories, has been called after the Cambodian government failed to respond to the unions’ demands, first submitted on 1st May 2006.

Among the actions the unions are calling for are: an increase in salary to $100 for each teacher and $80 for each worker per month; a reduction in working hours from 48 to 44 hours per week; the creation of a labour court; the elimination of child labour and corruption and; an end to discrimination against the rights and freedoms of unions.
