published 7 December 2006 updated 7 December 2006

Education International strongly condemns the unlawful military takeover in Fiji. "This unconstitutional move precludes the hopes for democracy and again throws the country into social turmoil," said the General Secretary of Education International, Fred van Leeuwen.

Education International calls for democracy and the elected Government of Fiji to be respected. Therefore, Education International strongly encourages Fiji Military Forces Commander Commodore Bainimarama to immediately return political power to the elected civil Government of Fiji.

The respect of democratic rule and international law are preconditions for a stable society and conducive learning environment for children of all ethnic origins, and for all people.

Education International is committed to support its affiliates in Fiji and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Education International is the global union federation of teachers which represents over 30 million members in 162 countries and has the Fiji Teachers’ Union (FTU) and the Fijian Teachers Association among its affiliates.
