Ethiopia: Amnesty International adopts detained ETA officials as prisoners of conscience

published 9 January 2007 updated 9 January 2007

Education International is happy to have the support of Amnesty International in its appeal for the release of ETA officials. An urgent action appeal was launched on 4 Jan for the release of Tilahun Ayalew, Anteneh Getnet and Meqcha Mengistu, who are prominent members of EI's affiliate, the Ethiopian Teacher Association.

Tilahun Ayalew and Anteneh Getnet are reported to be in custody, and are believed to have been tortured. Meqcha Mengistu is reported missing since 15 Dec 2006.

On 4 Jan, Amnesty International adopted them as prisoners of conscience.

Amnesty International calls for worldwide support to urge "the [Ethiopian] authorities to release Tilahun Ayalew and Anteneh Getnet immediately and unconditionally, as Amnesty International believes they are prisoners of conscience, held solely for exercising their right to peacefully express their opinions and to work as trade unionists".
