EI Executive Board to meet in Berlin

The 28th Executive Board Meeting will take place from 27-29 March in Berlin, Germany at the venue of the 5th World Congress. The meeting will mainly concentrate on the coming EI World Congress, which will be held from 22-27 July.

In this meeting, the Board will review draft resolutions submitted by member organisations, propose its own draft resolutions, as well as decide on the recipients of the Albert Shanker Education Award and Mary Hatwood Futrell Human and Trade Union Rights Award. The Executive Board will recommend resolutions to the Congress based on the Congress theme: "Educators - Joining Together for Quality Education and Social Justice" During the plenary sessions, the Congress debates the proposed resolutions and any amendments and adopts them. These resolutions then form the basis for many of the activities and programmes implemented by EI over the following three years. The Albert Shanker Education Award and the Mary Hatwood Futrell Human and Trade Union Rights Award The awards will be handed out at the Award Dinner during the EI World Congress, which will take place in the Estrel Convention Centre in Berlin from 22-26 July 2007. The Albert Shanker Education Award is given to an outstanding teacher or education employee, in recognition of his or her personal contribution to education, while the Mary Hatwood Futrell Human and Trade Union Rights Award is given to a national or local union leader or activist who has undertaken courageous and exemplary action to defend and promote human and trade union rights. The recipient of the 2004 Albert Shanker Education Award was Professor Errol L. Miller from Jamaica. Founding President of Jamaica Association of Teacher Educators in 1979, Professor Miller's ideas, in addition to contributing to the formulation of new educational policies, have been proven in various developing countries of the English-speaking Caribbean The recipient of the 2004 Mary Hatwood Futrell Human and Trade Union Rights Award is Enriqueta Estela Barnes de Carlotto from Argentina. She is the President of the Association of Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo. Under her leadership, the Association seeks to obtain sanctions against the perpetrators of the kidnappings and to defend the rights of the children, at both national and international levels, so that such intolerable violation of human rights will never be repeated.
