Press Release: Teachers care about quality education, social justice

BERLIN – 18 July – Educators from around the world are coming together in Berlin to intensify their efforts to meet the needs of every child, and to uphold their fundamental rights to a quality education in a more just world.

About 1,700 teachers and education workers will attend the 5th World Congress of Education International, 22 to 26 July. The theme is: “Educators joining together for quality education and social justice.” Thus, the focus will be on trade union challenges and on professionalism, as well as political, social and health issues impacting education everywhere. Its World Congress will be chaired by EI’s President, Thulas Nxesi of South Africa, who will welcome the President of the Federal Republic of German, Horst Köhler, to address the first plenary session. The opening ceremony will begin with a performance of the Poverty Requiem, a choral work to raise our voices against poverty. Other newsworthy events include the launch of the 2007 EI Barometer of Human and Trade Union Rights; the presentation of two major awards to honour outstanding teachers and trade unionists; reports on EI’s post-tsunami school reconstruction programme; and HIV/AIDS prevention through education.
