Ethiopia-Three teachers released
In an email dated 29 October 2007, Gemoraw Kassa, General Secretary of the Ethiopian Teachers' Association(ETA), informed EI that the Ethiopian Federal Supreme Court decided on that day to release on bail detained colleagues Anteneh Getnet, Berhanu Aba-Debissa, Wolde Dana, along with Wibit Ligamo, Dana’s wife.
However, he deeply regretted that their other colleague, Meqcha Mengistu, re-arrested last May with the others, has not been released on bail. He also expressed great concern about the situation of Tilahun Ayalew, chairman of Awi zone ETA branch, missing since last 28 May, and whose whereabouts remain unknown to date.
Kassa said that ETA attributes this positive achievement mainly to EI and its affiliates’ remarkable and relentless support campaign. EI appeals to EI members to continue supporting their Ethiopian colleagues by urging the Ethiopian authorities to release Mengistu and to seek information on Ayalew’s situation.
