Nicolás Richards has been working with Education International since May 2001. He started as a Regional Coordinator in the Latin America Regional Office where he conducted work related to EI Programme and Budget Activities and Development Cooperation Programmes.
In February 2003, Nicolás moved to Brussels and became the Development Cooperation Coordinator. Since then he has been monitoring and implementing, at a global level, cooperation projects and programmes established among EI members. At the same time he follows world events in order to bring awareness to EI members of where cooperation is needed to build up stronger and independent unions.
Nicolás has 17 years experience as a Primary School Teacher. Prior to his appointment as Regional Coordinator in Latin America, he won a provincial contest and was appointed Headmaster of one of the largest primary schools in his province, Río Negro, in Patagonia, Argentina.
From the beginning of his career as a teacher, Nicolás has been involved with union work. He is a member of the Unión de Trabajadores de la Educación de Rio Negro (UnTER), and was General Secretary of the union branch in Cipolletti, congress delegate to CTERA and a member of the provincial board.
At the same time, he was active in the foundation of the Central de Trabajadores Argentinos (CTA), becoming the General Secretary in his city and the Press Officer for the Rio Negro District. He worked in CTERA, the National Confederation of Teacher Unions, as an Election Officer between 1995 and 2002. Nicolás was also a delegate from CTERA to the National Congress of the Trade Union Centre, CTA.
