Education International works closely with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the Global Union Federations, and the Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC) at the OECD, through the Council of Global Unions, in keeping with the general principles in the EI Constitution (Article 3). Global Unions work together with a shared commitment to the ideas and principles of the trade union movement. They share a common determination to organize, to defend human rights and labour standards everywhere, and to promote the growth of trade unions for the benefit of all working men and women and their families.

Global Unions express the voice of working people at major world summits like the G8 and the G20, at the financial institutions, including the World Bank, and the IMF, at related bodies such as the OECD, and at the World Economic Forum.
A major priority for Global Unions now is the campaign for properly resourced Quality Public Services. Following a successful conference in Geneva in October 2010, the Council of Global Unions has adopted a Charter, and an Action Plan, linking global advocacy with local action.
