Save Farzad: Your support is still urgently needed!

published 15 September 2008 updated 15 September 2008

According to the latest news on Farsi websites, the situation of Iranian teacher trade unionist Farzad Kamangar remains critical. Farzad is still alive, but facing the death sentence which has not yet been commuted. At present, he is in solitary confinement in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison in section 209, the section for political prisoners.

EI thanks all member organisations and individuals who have supported the “Save Farzad” campaign in recent weeks. Almost 800 online messages have been sent to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad protesting the death sentence, which was passed down following a trial that fell far short of both Iranian and international standards of fairness. Twenty-four EI member organisations, from all continents, also sent official protest letters in the name of their respective teacher unions.

EI continues to closely follow the developments of this case and urges its member organisations to show solidarity by continuing to write official letters to the Iranian authorities and asking their members to send the online message.

It is important to show that teachers and all concerned citizens stand in solidarity with colleagues who are denied fundamental rights, such as the freedom of expression and freedom of association.

Please continue to help us save Farzad's life!
