Around 70 delegates participated in the Indigenous caucus, one of three pre-congress events held at the Estrel convention centre, Berlin, today 20th July.
The caucus aims to strengthen teacher unions’ work by providing a voice for indigenous teachers to express their concerns, needs and visions. The meeting, chaired by the Australian Education Union’s Deputy Federal Secretary and former Aboriginal Education officer Darcel Russell included discussions on issues related to trade unions; children, family and the community; and indigenous union members. Among items agreed were the organisation of an international conference on Indigenous people. Future strategies and plans for the period 2008 – 2012 were also discussed.
