World Teachers' Day: Teachers around the world celebrate their profession

published 5 October 2007 updated 5 October 2007

Today, World Teachers' Day, EI joins people around the world in celebrating the important role of teachers and their contribution to our society.

World Teachers' Day, commemorates the signing of the UNESCO-ILO Recommendations on the Status of Teaching Personnel on 5 October 1966, as well as the UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Higher Education and Research Personnel in 1997.

Yet many teachers have to work in conditions inadequate for their profession. This has a huge impact on both the learning conditions of students as well as the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals of Education for All by 2015.

Together with its partner intergovernmental organisations, UNESCO, ILO, UNDP and UNICEF, EI has issued a Joint Message on the occasion of World Teachers' Day 2007. This is available from the links below.
