An early start for Global Action Week 2007 (23-29 April) with a special event at the European Parliament in Brussels

published 30 January 2007 updated 30 January 2007

EI and its partners in the Global Campaign For Education (GCE) are organising a special lobbying event at the European Parliament on 30 Jan 2007 to officially announce Global Action Week 2007.

The aim of the special event is to lobby the European Commission and the German government headed by Chancellor Angela Merkel, which currently holds the Chair of the G8 and the Presidency of the European Union (EU), to stick to their promises on achieving Education for All (EFA). Children from nine EU countries plus Senegal and Argentina will question members of the European Parliament, Ministers and Commission Officials about what they intend to do to get all children to school by 2015. At present, 80 million children throughout the world are still out of school. This special event is also intended to lobby leaders of the EU member states to increase their country's contributions to primary education in industrialising countries by at least $8 billion per year. The GCE is a worldwide conglomeration of international organisations of which EI is the largest. EI and its GCE partners are campaigning for the realisation of the Millenium Development Goal of Education For All by 2015. Global Action Week is the annual campaigning week organised by the GCE. The theme of this year's action week is Education as a Human Right, and it will be held from 23-30 April 2007.
