published 20 July 2007 updated 20 July 2007

Ninety delegates to the 5th World Congress of Education International met to discuss issues relating to LGBT educators and students as part of the pre-congress programme.

The seminar’s keynote speaker was Kevin Jennings, Executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) . GLSEN is a New York-based NGO whose mission is to ensure that all schools provide a safe, accepting and nurturing environment for LGBT students.

Jennings’s well received presentation set the tone for the seminar which was a follow-up to a two day forum co-sponsored by EI and PSI and held 3 years ago at the EI world congress in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The workshop enabled the participants to establish strategies to protect the rights of LGBT Educators and students and to make recommendations to EI’s executive for future actions related to LGBT and equality.

EI is proud of the fact that a trade union federation representing educators is taking the lead internationally to secure and protect the human and civil rights of LGBT people.
