Peru: EI sends its condolences to Peruvian colleagues

published 17 August 2007 updated 17 August 2007

EI sends its condolences to the family and friends of the victims of the Peruvian earthquake, which took place just off the coast of the country on 15 August.

At least 450 people perished and many more were injured in the disaster. Officials expect the death toll to continue to rise.

The 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck on Wednesday evening, affecting the province of Ica most severely. Several cities, such as Ica and Imperial, suffered much devastation and 70% of the town of Pisco was destroyed.

President Alan Garcia declared that all public buildings, including schools, would be closed for three days.

EI is contacting its member organisation, the Sindicato Unitario de Trabajadores en la Educación del Perú (SUTEP), to find out what damages the earthquake has brought to teachers, children and schools in the region.

The earthquake is a further blow to SUTEP and Peruvian teachers as they are now in the midst of negotiating with the government about the new Teacher Career Law.

Further information about the situation will be posted on this site soon.
