Successful pay bargaining in Mexico
National collective bargaining by the Mexican trade union SNTE has ended with a significant pay rise for education workers, in recognition of their work with the children and youth of Mexico.
The National Council, the SNTE’s governing body, has approved the agreement, which sets out major improvements in the salaries of Mexico’s education workers.
The union’s national leaders see these results as a major achievement given the complex economic situation in the labour world. They have also said they will continue to fight for quality public education, to defend their members’ rights and improve their working conditions.
Education International has congratulated the SNTE on its successful negotiations, which have resulted in a significant improvement in the working conditions of all workers in the sector, in a world in the midst of change, under threat from privatisation and cuts in public education budgets.
