published 28 August 2024 updated 16 July 2025

A science teacher at a junior high school in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan for 12 years, Takashi Kajiwara became a full-time union officer, serving as President of Yamanashi Teachers Union, Vice President and then President of the Japan Teachers’ Union (JTU), a position he currently holds.

He was elected Vice President of Education International (EI) in 2024, at the 10th EI World Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Peace education is one of his main interests, having taught at a Japanese school in Hong Kong. He strongly believes that children need to learn history in all its complexity, including the truth of what Japan did during wars against surrounding countries in Asia and the Pacific.

He consistently encourages JTU members to base their teaching on the principles of human rights education.
