As war escalates, Education International calls for peace, dialogue, and respect for the right to education
Education International is deeply concerned about the escalating military aggression between Israel and Iran, and the continued bombing and starvation in Gaza.
The ongoing conflict has led to widespread school closures and disrupted access to education. In addition, students, teachers, and their communities are being killed, injured, and displaced as political leaders fail to respond to calls for peace and diplomatic cease fire solutions. Education International calls for the protection of education and the safeguarding of children and teachers in all affected areas. As stated in EI Congress Resolution on peace education: “Wars and conflicts are the greatest violations of human rights”. The EI Congress underscored the “urgent need to uphold peace, democracy, human rights, and the values of solidarity and humanism as the foundation of just and equitable societies”.
Amid a global rise in armed conflict around the globe, EI consistently calls for peace, disarmament, and inclusive dialogue, with the involvement of trade union representatives grounded in international law and human rights. We support the right of all peoples, including Palestinians, to self-determination, dignity and freedom from oppression.
Drawing on the present and historical experiences of our members who suffer under imperialism, modern-day slavery, exploitation, racism, sexism, and all forms of oppression, EI calls for:
- Immediate ceasefires in Gaza, Israel, Lebanon, and Iran, to protect civilians and enable the safe reopening of schools.
- The respect of schools as safe sanctuaries not to be targeted by any armed group.
- The protection of education in emergencies, in line with international humanitarian law, including the right of all children and youth to access safe, quality education.
- Accountability for violations of international law, including attacks on schools, educators, and students.
- Unrestricted humanitarian access to all affected populations, ensuring the provision of basic services and psychosocial support for learners and educators.
- Inclusive peace processes that involve educators, trade unions, and civil society, recognising the vital role of education in peacebuilding and reconciliation.
- Investment in public education systems as a pathway to sustainable development, equality, and resilience in post-conflict recovery.
- Solidarity with workers and communities resisting occupation, authoritarianism, and systemic oppression in all its forms.
EI urges governments, political leaders, and international bodies to recommit to multilateralism, peace and respect for human dignity, grounded in the principles of democracy, self determination, social justice and equity. EI also reaffirms that education is not only a tool for peace but also for liberation and justice. In the context of occupation and systemic oppression, education empowers communities to resist and rebuild.
EI stands in solidarity with all people affected by war and will continue to advocate for a peaceful and just world where schools remain safe places of joy, learning, and growth.
