The global education union movement stands with all those affected by the tragic shooting that took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Thailand on August 7.

Seven people lost their lives in the attack, including five teachers and the suspect’s grandparents. More than 30 people, including students, were injured with several reported to be in critical condition.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and the entire school community. Our thoughts go out to those who are injured. We stand with teachers across Thailand who feel this loss deeply and we grieve alongside them. Violence has no place in schools. Education institutions must be protected as safe spaces of learning, joy, and belonging for all students and their teachers”, stated David Edwards, Education International General Secretary.

Anand Singh, Director of Education International Asia Pacific, echoed this call, noting that “schools must remain safe places where children can learn, grow, and thrive, and where educators can teach free from violence and fear”.

Teachers and school staff played a critical role in protecting and evacuating students during the shooting. “We commend the bravery of our colleagues and their commitment to their students but stress that no teacher should have to face such a crisis or lose their life at their place of work”, Edwards noted.

Educators everywhere call for urgent measures to prevent further tragedies and protect school communities in Thailand and all around the world.
