Son of Iranian trade unionist released from prison

published 3 February 2009 updated 3 February 2009

Sajad Khaksari has been released from prison in Tehran, but only “on condition.” In other words, he is not really free and clear.

Sajad is the 25-year-old son of Mohamad Khaksari, one of Iran’s leading teacher trade unionists. Because his court file remains open, he could still face a new detention order or another type of restriction, such as a ban on travel, which has often been invoked against human rights defenders and other activists. In many cases the courts keep files open in an effort to intimidate defendants, who never know when their case could become active once again.

Sajad’s father has faced years of intimidation and court charges due to his role at the head of the Iranian Teacher Trade Association, which has been banned by the Iranian government.
