Canada: Enhancing indigenous peoples’ education

published 8 December 2011 updated 8 December 2011

The Advisory Committee on Aboriginal Education of the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF), one of EI’s national affiliates, has endorsed the Initiative of Ashoka Changemakers, a global online community, aiming at sharing ideas or projects about supporting First Nations, Métis and Inuit learners.

This initiative covers a wide range of issues: designing wilderness skills training, or developing of a new approach to early childhood learning; designing a distance mentoring program, or a new way to bring music to your school; or developing an approach to career and workplace training tailored for Aboriginal people.

The focus must be learning, inside or beyond the classroom. By entering the contest, individuals, groups or organisations from Canada and around the world can win one of more than 30 awards ranging from $500 to $5,000. The final deadline for entries is January 27th, 2012.

EI General Secretary, Fred van Leeuwen, stated: “We strongly recommend to our affiliates to submit projects in the frame of the Ashoka Changemakers Initiative.”

He added “EI has been promoting the rights of Indigenous Peoples provided for in international human rights instruments since its creation. It has consistently called on its member organisations to promote education for Indigenous Peoples, in collaboration with the latter, to meet their aspirations and needs.”
